Energy policy task force remains adamant
Mar 16, 2002
In spite of widespread criticism, the B.C. government's panel on energy policy is reportedly sticking to its guns that B.C. Hydro be privatized and provincial electricity rates hiked.
Ian Mulgrew, Vancouver Sun ... article

Long on gas and coal, short on good ideas, this is a policy that was designed long before the Liberals were elected, and bullied into existence by Gordon Campbell and others on and off the task force. British Columbians will pay a lot more for electricity in the future, but the increase in costs won't underwrite a renewable energy program, they'll go straight to corporate bottom lines.

Interim Report from the Energy Policy Task Force
Dec 17, 2001
Four Critical Action Items:
1a. Break BC Hydro into generation, transmission, distribution companies
1b. Move to market pricing for electricity
2. Natural gas storage required for Lower Mainland (could be on VI)
3. Exploit coal more aggressively
4. Develop alternative (high-tech) energy sources
What does the report say about GSX? Page 18 echoes BC Hydro's refrain - alternatives cost more, aren't dependable, take too long - "the issue is immediate and needs to be resolved now"

No surprises - ramped up gas production, stripped down regulation. Excessive use of phrases "performance based" and "results based". The word "wind" is but a slight breeze. Expected, but nevertheless disappointing.

BC's Energy Resources
July 27, 2001
WHISTLER — Speaking notes for a presentation by Richard Neufeld, the Minister of Energy and Mines, at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region conference in Whistler. The subject is BC's Energy Resources. The notes indicate unqualified estimates for coal bed methane, and offshore reserves.  Coal also is highlighted as an energy resource. Sustainable technologies warrant a single bullet at the end of the presentation. We want to make the most of these resources and use our energy to re-ignite the BC economy.
